My first Ruger Blackhawk .357 Revolver

A young man in his 30’s and engaged in an eager search of a reliable and high quality .357 six shot single action revolver, the hunt and pursuit found him what he believed to be one of the most perfected guns ever made in the USA.

The Ruger Blackhawk SA six shot was a most impressive hunting weapon or self-defense gun. I chose the 4 inch barrel but the model was available in various sizes.

I felt that way because although I normally don’t recommend SA revolvers for self-defense purposes, this mainstay of the Ruger Blackhawk family was very easy to shoot for beginners or pros and also ultimately top notch and dependable, accurate and durable whether you were in the field hunting deer or bear or driving down the road or home where the need was to ultimately have something of a man stopper to protect your family.

I have been criticized for telling people to buy this particular gun but after you fire a few hundred rounds through it durable and much trademark value and excellence, you will agree this is gun is a keeper and worth the time and money to put in your armory gun box. The gun was made to look like the old western style Colt revolvers and shoots, feels and points much like the single action Colt that won the west.

I chose a .357 caliber weapon for dual reasons. I was a camper back then an avid hunter. I wanted a back up that had the caliber to put game down if I had to and to protect my self from two legged and four legged critters while in the wild or the remotely traveled mountains. This gun served both purposes very well and never gave me a lick of trouble. The ammunition was not expensive and easy to find no matter what brand of ammo you preferred.

Blackhawks are great guns.  I have owned many Ruger made handguns and long guns and loved them all. If I traded one or sold one it was because they paid me good price to acquire another kind of gun I wanted or looked for. People were never shy to make a good bid on these and that made them an investment.

They are made with quality and attention to details. My gun was made around the 1970 circa and still brand new with no blue worn and no scratches. It sat neatly inside a good quality leather holster.  It was indeed a beautiful piece put together well. This particular gun had a hump in the top rear of the frame to house the rear sight. The other kind are known as flat top guns that have the rear sit inletted into it. The grips were comfortable and the feel was natural.

Shooting this gun was a pure joy. Whether you shot .38 caliber rounds for practice or hollow point .357 high velocity rounds, it delivered the same accuracy and dependability. Rain, wind, sand or snow, this gun was easy to keep clean and very easy to maintain. It didn’t take much to make it look like the awesome weapon it really was.  Distance was no concern as the four inch barrel did everything it was designed to do as a hunting gun or a man-stopper.

  1. My first revolver was the same gun. I bought it for $75 in a bar from an old man I knew. He had taken a few deer with it. It came with a buckskin holster that he had made from a deer he shot. A Blackhawk will last for many generations.
